The Plant Protection Department of the Faculty of Agriculture of Ondokuz Mayıs University was established in 1984. The Plant Protection Department’s first students were enrolled in 1992 and graduated in 1996.
The main objective of teaching in plant protection is to provide a strong basic knowledge of the identification, biology and control of pests, diseases and weeds of cultivated plants.
Research at the department focuses on the identification, biology and control of insects, mites and nematodes; viral, bacterial and fungal disease identification and control methods; weed biology and interaction with cultivated plants; weed management, and the biological control of pests, diseases and weeds.
The department has Acarology, Entomology, Nematology, Bacteriology, Mycology, Virology and Weed Science laboratories, 2 growth rooms and 2 climate controlled glasshouse with 6 individual sections.
There are two divisions at the department Entomology and Phytopathology. The department offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs.
The Department of Plant Protection staff consists of 11 Professors, 2 Associate Professors and 4 Research Assistants, 17 academic staff in total.
Graduates are employed by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock; Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation, Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs, and also by pesticides companies, agricultural businesses and organic farms; graduates are entitled to open pesticide dealerships.
